| Cartaya on the Costa de la Luz |
The village Cartaya (population 13 000) is situated approximately 6km from the Atlantic Ocean, Costa de la Luz and 26km from the border of Portugal. It is well connected by the A49/E1 motorway (only 10 minutes away) and is 20 minutes from Ayamonte and 30 minutes to the city of Huelva by car.

Airports
The nearest airport to Cartaya is Faro Airport in Portugal - 1 hour away. Seville Airport is approximately 1.5 hours away - both by motorway. Plans have been approved to build a local airport within the region. This will open the area up to mass tourism.
Cadiz, Gibraltar, North Africa
Cartaya is also within travelling distance of Cadiz, Gibraltar and North Africa. For those of you who are motor bike and Formula One fanatics, Cartaya is approximately 2 hours away from Jerez which hosts Spanish Grand Prixs.
Trains
The AVE (spanish high speed train network) connects throughout Spain to Seville. Plans are in progress to extend the high speed link to the city of Huelva. There is presently a train and bus service from Huelva to Seville.
Pine trees
Over 12 000 hectares of pine groves grow from the centre of the region of Cartaya and down to the coast. The pine forests and much of the coastline are protected against mass development, as the Council of Cartaya are determined that this part of Spain will not be developed in the same manner as the other Costas. They are keen to preserve the area to ensure that it continues to attract tourists and people to live, and as a result, this is one of the most under-developed areas on the coast of the Costa de la Luz.
However, like most villages, development is slowly coming to the area. Within the last four years, the Council have recently pedestrianised the main thoroughfare of the village, built a modern cultural centre and also constructed a sports complex.
The landscape surrounding the village is covered with a wide range of fruit orchards, such as oranges, plums, peaches, apples, tangerines and the famous strawberrys. Local Cartayans often say that oranges marked with the distinctive "Valencia Orange" brand, actually come from Cartaya!
Not only is Cartaya one of the most important fruit exporting areas in the whole of Spain but is also one of the greenest areas on the Costa de la Luz.
